If the purpose of the carbon tax is to reduce the effects of climate change, then it is completely pointless to tax coal burning power stations and use the tax money to compensate people for the higher electricity costs caused by the carbon tax. People will continue to consume the same amount of carbon based energy. Nothing has changed, except a new government bureaucracy has been created, and the carbon tax money can be directed to select groups in order to buy votes.
If the purpose of the carbon tax is to reduce the effects of climate change, then the tax money must be used exclusively for providing renewable energy.
Please note that nuclear energy is NOT renewable. If all electricity was generated by nuclear power, all known uranium reserves would be gone in less than a decade, and future generations would have the intractable burden of preventing toxic nuclear waste from entering the biosphere.
Doing something meaningful about climate change requires using less energy and paying more for the energy that we do use. This will result in a lower standard of living. It is time that this was honestly explained.
It will need at least a decade for businesses and individuals to make an orderly transition to an economy based upon renewable energy.
